Butterfly Class - Reception

We are a merged EYFS setting. This means our reception and nursery classes share a learning space. This fosters:

  •  Smoother Transitions: Starting school can be daunting. In a merged unit, familiar faces and routines ease anxiety, making the shift from nursery to reception seamless and stress-free.
  • Natural Learning: Younger children learn through observation and imitation. By interacting with older peers, they'll be exposed to more advanced concepts, accelerating their own development.
  • Social & Emotional Growth: Mixed-age groups encourage collaboration, empathy, and leadership skills. Reception children gain confidence supporting younger ones, while younger children develop social skills by interacting with a wider range of peers.
  • Richer Learning Environment: Our combined unit offers more resources and space, allowing for diverse activities and play areas that cater to a broader range of needs and interests.

It's important to remember that every child develops at their own pace. Experienced teachers in merged units ensure individual needs are met, providing a nurturing and stimulating environment for all.

Reception Curriculum Overview 2026-2027

Reading and home learning

Every week, your child will bring home three books: their Read Write Inc. storybook, a matching Book Bag book and a ‘book to share’ from our library. Homework is set on Fridays and is due back the following Wednesday. Reading with your child little and often makes the biggest difference.

Trips and visits

Every half term, each class has an educational visit or workshop. See what Reception is doing this year in our Educational Visits Overview 2026–27 (PDF).
